2019 Scholarship Extravaganza

Marriott Marquis Downtown Houston

The Scholarship Extravaganza has raised over $1,500,000 since 2006 for Houston-area accounting students. The Houston TSCPA Foundation began raising money for scholarships when the Texas State Board implemented a requirement that all CPA candidates must complete 150 hours of education prior to sitting for the exam. In order to obtain the hours needed, students typically must attend a 5th year of college to meet the requirements and the Foundation wanted to help students who may be unable to financially absorb this expense with their costs.

The percentage of accounting students sitting for the exam and becoming licensed CPAs has declined in recent years, creating a shortage of CPAs for firms and companies. There are more accounting graduates but a smaller percentage taking the next step to become a CPA. We hope to encourage more of our Houston area accounting students to finish the educational requirements and finish achieving their license.

Funds raised also benefit CPAs Helping Schools. This program provides funding to local districts for educational projects, emphasizing aid to economically disadvantaged schools and volunteers participate in career day presentations at local schools. Since 2002, CPAs Helping Schools has reviewed over 600 grant applications, awarding funding in excess of $550,000 to over 200 schools in 35 local districts, private, parochial schools and nonprofit educational organizations.
