The Society provides and participates in a wide variety of civic activities.
CPAs Helping Schools - established in 1991, this program encourages CPAs to become actively involved with the education of the youth in Texas. Dedicated to improving the quality and scope of education, kindergarten through grade 12, this initiative provides a way for Society members to get actively involved in supporting area schools. Financial grants are provided to numerous schools where it has been identified that there is little or no significant business partnership. Grant Applications are accepted throughout the year; grants are awarded in September, January and April. Uniforms and books are collected to provide these necessary items to schools serving at-risk students. Middle school students are given a theme each year to produce entries for the annual Art and Essay Contest. Teachers may download the Invitation Letter and Response Form, Art Contest Instructions and Entry Form, and/or Essay Contest Instructions and Entry Form and complete for their interested students. Finally, through its partnerships, CPAs Helping Schools sponsors a math or accounting fellowship for a local educator through Fund for Teachers and two student s cholarships are awarded to candidates identified through the Junior A chievement program.
Community Services Committee – the members of this committee provide nonprofit organizations with volunteer assistance (see Volunteer Opportunities below). The committee also sponsors a series of educational seminars for nonprofit organizations. For more than 30 years it has coordinated the Santa CPAs fund drive among members for toys and books for underprivileged children in the Gulf Coast Community Services Head Start program, contributing $10,000 in books, gifts, and fruit this past Christmas. Download the barcode and have it lniked to your KrogerPlus Card for the 2008-2009 program year (through April 30, 2009). A percentage of your total purchases is received and kept in a restricted fund to be used for area community service projects identified by the committee.

Sponsorship information can be found in the CPE & Calendar section of this web site.
Taxpayer Assistance – the Society provides volunteers for the “Volunteer Income Tax Assistance” program which provides free tax return assistance to low income, elderly, non-English speaking and physically challenged taxpayers who cannot afford professional tax help (see Volunteer Opportunities below).
Annual Charity Extravaganza – focuses on three goals: 1) To raise significant funds for a worthy nonprofit organization benefiting youth of the Greater Houston area; 2) To pay tribute to members of the community for outstanding personal accomplishments and contributions to the betterment of life in our community; and 3) To create an opportunity for members of the Houston Society to participate in an activity that provides a service to the community and which will raise public awareness of CPAs' civic support.
