Houston CPA Society Prepares Professionals, Serves Community
The Houston CPA Society, a Society of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants, was organized in 1928 for the purpose of networking and social interaction. In the 1940s the Society began offering continuing education for its members. Since then the organization has become a permanent source of continuing education as well as a professional network for CPAs, not only in Houston, but throughout Texas. Over 31,000 hours of committee-sponsored continuing education was provided to Society members this past year.
The Houston CPA Society’s reputation for action, integrity and competence is the result of the strong leadership of its volunteers. With a membership base of 8,000 CPAs from a 13-county* area, the Society is the largest CPA Society in Texas and larger than 42 state CPA societies.
With over 35 specific committees plus an active Student Auxiliary, the Society abounds with volunteer activity. There is a committee to meet the needs and interests of every CPA.
Community service is an activity prioritized by the leadership and members. Through the Society’s endowment and its CPAs Helping Schools program, many schools in Houston and the surrounding counties have benefited from cash grants, mentorship, clothing drives and field trips. The Society also gives books and toys to 6,000 children each year through Santa CPAs.
The Annual Charity Extravaganza and annual CPA Golf Classic golf tournament sponsored by the Society have contributed more than $3 million to various young-oriented charities and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Texas Gulf Coast over the past 16 years.
In addition, members provide free tax help to disadvantaged citizens and non-resident alien students. As a service to the community, the Society maintains a no-cost Referral Service for anyone looking for a CPA. This service is advertised in the Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages and can be accessed through our website or by calling the Society office (713.622.7733). Referrals are made based on zip code zones, client’s needs and the ability of a firm to meet those needs. A Speaker's Bureau is also available to community organizations, clubs and businesses.
